What a delight to find this website....I have loved this hotel since my first stay in 1989. The atmosphere is outstanding, so french that I can't get enough and I will always stay here, when I am in Paris... Thank you for having this place and for letting me have the opportunity to stay here once in a while...Lots of love from Zette

R.G. was recently off to France for her friends' wedding in the Loire Valley, and she popped into Paris on the way there and back avec her ami, T.P. The photos from the last time she stayed in old hotels of the City of Lights went missing, so it was very important that R.G. get a good place to document.

And so she did. The Grand Hotel de Clermont is absolutely perfect for R.G.'s purposes: on a quiet street in Montmartre, R.G.'s favorite neighborhood; the first residence of Edith Piaf as a young, busking teenager (R.G. forgot to ask for her room); firm mattresses (T.P. says hard); TV-free; 38 Euros for a double; and above arguably the best bar in Paris.

The bar is a real selling point. If you abstain, the Clermont loses some pull. The bartender is friendly but cool, the clientele is all local, the interior is charming and the music great old French standards as opposed to ubiquitous Euro crap. Even though their combined French is not impressive, R.G. and T.P. met many cheerful drunken folk, and, when they left the next night to broaden their horizons around the corner, they ran into many of the same revelers as if the party had not stopped. And that was a Monday and a Tuesday.

Cheap but Cheerful(ish)

Here, as everywhere, you get what you pay for, and the Grand Hotel de Clermont is one of the cheapest hotels in Paris. Situated above a bar that is open into the early hours of the morning, and nestled in the middle of Paris' notorious red light district, this is not an ideal destination for the timid traveller.

With that said, the rooms are clean, relatively comfortable and very affordable, so it's a great place for backpackers. There are just over ten rooms, all of a similar standard (clean but sparse). There are no en-suites, but a bathroom is generally shared between two rooms (which is all there is on a floor). There aren't any baths, but the showers are kept clean (note that in at least one bathroom there was no lock to be found, so make sure you're well acquainted with your travelling companions). Guests are free to smoke in all rooms, and bring in their own alcohol etc.

The staff have limited English, but are very friendly once you get to know them a bit. The bar is noisy, there's no two ways about it, but it's also one of the cheapest bars in Paris, which is an obvious advantage. At time of writing a pint of beer was nearly a quarter of the cost in the bars near the Moulin Rouge, just a few hundred metres away. Some food is also served, but with so many places to eat nearby, there isn't much need for it. There are at least three good restaurants on the same road, all of which are fairly well priced.
